When autumn casts its magical spell, transforming landscapes with vibrant hues of red, gold, and orange, the south-central region of Alaska emerges as an extraordinary destination for travelers seeking natural beauty and unique experiences. Anchorage, the largest city in the state, serves as the gateway to a wonderland that comes alive in the fall season. If you’re dreaming of embarking on an unforgettable journey to Alaska’s south-central area around Anchorage this autumn, you’re in for a treat. Let’s delve into the enchanting world that awaits you.

1. Fall Foliage Extravaganza

Autumn in south-central Alaska is a visual spectacle like no other. As temperatures cool, deciduous trees and shrubs transform into a breathtaking symphony of colors. Perhaps you would enjoy local hiking trails for experiencing the fall wonder. From the iconic birch trees to the fiery reds of the alder bushes, the landscape is a masterpiece painted by Mother Nature herself. Imagine walking through trails surrounded by a palette of red, orange, and gold leaves that seem to set the very air ablaze. Capture the magic with your camera, but remember, no picture can truly capture the essence of being immersed in this seasonal wonderland.

2. Anchorage: A Cosmopolitan Wilderness

Anchorage, the vibrant urban hub of Alaska, seamlessly blends modern amenities with the untamed beauty of its natural surroundings. In autumn, the city exudes a unique charm, with the Chugach Mountains in the backdrop and leaves crunching beneath your feet as you explore. Stroll through the city’s parks, such as Kincaid Park or the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, where you can witness the splendor of autumn against the backdrop of the shimmering Cook Inlet.

3. Wildlife Encounters

Autumn in Alaska is also a prime time for wildlife viewing. As the seasons change, animals prepare for the approaching winter, making it a fantastic opportunity to catch glimpses of various species. Keep an eye out for moose and their young calves, as well as eagles soaring overhead. If you’re lucky, you might even spot bears foraging before hibernation. Be sure to practice responsible wildlife viewing and maintain a safe distance.

4. Cultural Immersion

Alaska’s indigenous cultures are an integral part of the region’s identity, and autumn presents a chance to learn and engage. Local events, workshops, and performances provide insights into the rich traditions and history of the native communities. From storytelling to art exhibitions, you’ll find opportunities to connect with the people who have called this land home for generations.

It must be mid-June.

Hotels are booked; B&Bs are booked and both hotels and B&Bs are unable to fill all requests for accommodations! When traveling to Alaska, make your room reservations and car rentals far in advance. We discovered that the same advice holds true for many restaurants in the Anchorage area.

While this advice is good any time of year, mid-June (Solstice) seems to be the time of the greatest pinch. Perhaps the Mayor’s Marathon event is part of this, or perhaps it is the peak time for vacationers to visit. Advanced planning will make your travel much more enjoyable. Travel in Winter? Sure! The landscape is brilliant, and many cultural events provide entertainment when you have a rosy glow from sun and snow! Plan now for the Iditarod – we are counting the days and hoping for a good snowpack for the race. The history of the Iditarod is told well in a book, The Cruelest Miles, and you can get the 2023 details when you visit the event site.  Here’s the thing: planning ahead is imperative if you want a place to get some sleep.   Anchorage fills up, and posts along the trail through Alaska do too.  Try the ‘inspected and approved’ B&Bs of Alaska for clean, safe, pleasant places where you will be well taken care of.  Want to know what more there is to do at this time of year? Check Winter Events for ideas!

There are great places to eat in Anchorage – every visitor must go to Mooses Tooth for amazing pizza and the micro-brewery favorites. They have a sister restaurant with a different menu, called Bear Tooth. Restaurants are not all downtown: try Pangea for some amazing entrees!  And Southside Bistro in south Anchorage (that will mean all of about six miles driving) is top shelf (and near several B&Bs that are inspected & approved.)

Anchorage has a trademark: the drive-through coffee kiosks.  Try them all – drive up, get a fresh cuppa at whatever strength you like – you may never settle for a nation-wide-label coffee shop again.  Just try to count all the coffee kiosks you see in a square mile.

You won’t lack for things to do, and you will want a nice place for the night.  Some B&Bs feature fireplaces and hot tubs along with hospitality, privacy, and peacefulness.  With the ‘inspected & approved’ label you get the assurance of professional business practices, licensing, permitting, and insurance that might otherwise be hit or miss.  And you will get innkeepers who know the city and the state so when you want a recommendation, you have your own expert.

Want to make a choice based on particular amenities? Or by geographic areas so that you are staying near your old roommate, cousin, or friends?

When you are ready to tour the state, we can guide you to good B&Bs outside of Anchorage – just ask!

Blue Poppies in Anchorage, AK

It is now Spring, and usually, we celebrate the turn of the seasons with anticipation for the travel season. In 2020, the situation with COVID-19 makes the outlook a bit less brilliant. Many travelers have canceled their travel plans as directed by their employers or changes in airline, cruise, or other transportation provider mandates.

Anchorage Bed and Breakfasts that bear the “Inspected & Approved” emblem give you a choice for accommodations if you are visiting the area. These B&Bs are small, having 1 – 5 rooms. They are located in residential areas as the Municipality of Anchorage requires that B&Bs are located within homes where the guest resides. (Note – not all businesses advertising as B&Bs are in compliance with the Muni’s requirements).

When you book with an “Inspected & Approved” B&B, you are connecting with AABBA inns. Members of AABBA follow a code of expectations for professionalism in the business – and the members share a zeal for traveler care and service.

Our B&B owners have adjusted their requirements for cancellation, recognizing that you may have a concern if you book and then feel ill just before traveling. Talk with us!

All businesses are concerned about transmission, and with the guidance of the CDC, we support hand washing, social distancing, and other practices to break the chain. When you enter a B&B, remove your shoes and immediately wash your hands. Don’t be offended if we ask to take your temperature with a non-touching thermometer. Avoid touching surfaces such as railings, tabletops, and so forth. Have you perfected opening doors and pressing elevator buttons with your elbow? It is a skill that is useful every day of your life, not just in response to the current virus!

Anchorage B&Bs are regulated to provide one meal (maximum), usually breakfast, to B&B guests. With our restaurants, coffee shops, and bars under mandate to provide no in-house service, you may want to speak with your B&B host about take-out and delivery options. Although we strongly support practices that are ‘green’ and ecology oriented, now is the time to use disposable eating utensils and disposing of everything to an outdoor trash receptacle after dining.  Avoid placing your phone or other items on a surface where food is served (the advice is good for all surfaces. Can you keep your phone in a pocket?)

If you feel ill or suspect you are getting ill while staying at a B&B, remember that you have been incubating for several days. Let your host know immediately and allow us to link you with local health care options.

With care, your travel will be delightful and you will see the Alaska beauty at a time when fewer travelers are vying for the same views and photographic vistas. We look forward to seeing you in 2020! Call 907-227-2393 to reach a reservation volunteer or send us a note about your travel plans.

Early in 2020, the Coronavirus Covid19 appeared in the United States after affecting other countries around the world. A the time of this writing, Alaska has had no positive test results. Businesspersons in the travel and tourism industry do not take that status as a reason to ignore the impact of Covid19, and we are examining our plans and processes. We want travelers’ time in Alaska to be wonderful, and we want our staff and volunteers to be well guarded.

Many people know the basics of prevention: the CDC and local public health departments have quickly shared the steps, and most people are aware of precautions, symptoms that should cause them to stay at home, and supplies they should have in stock.  Travelers, too, are preparing: many are purchasing travel insurance along with their tickets.

The best advice is this: do not be complacent. Avoid thinking the problem is overblown or unreal. At the same time, being anxious or fearful is unproductive. Instead, make your plans and verify whether your hosts have risk management plans in place. Then, before your travel, check the CDC site for confirmed cases of Covid19 and continue your hygiene of hand washing, not touching the face, and avoiding contact with surfaces touched by others (door handles, hand railings, etc.).

Above all, keep planning your Alaska travel. We hope that your trip will exceed your dreams!

Anchorage in August – Memorable Recipes to Take Home!
Mt McKinley Rub on salmon with fresh green beans

Fish with Mt McKinley Rub

As the summer heat decreases and the days stay long and comfortable, visitors take to the trails and in-town walking tours. Then they head to Anchorage’s best restaurants for a taste of the fresh fish and the locally grown vegetables that grace our tables at this time of year!

For those who like their fish (or chicken or ribs) spicy, we recommend the seasoning we call the Mt. McKinley Rub. Here is how it used:

Mt McKinley Rub

Moisten fish or meat such as ribs, chicken or turkey breast with mayo, then sprinkle with rub. The more rub used, the hotter the food will be. Cook or grill meat as usual.

To make it for home-use, combine the following and store at room temperature in a jar with a tight-fitting lid.

Ingredients:
4 T cumin
4 T chili powder
2 T coriander
1 T cinnamon
1 T brown sugar
2 T salt
1 T red pepper flakes
2 T black pepper

Alaska Scallops with Lime

Perhaps your taste runs to shrimp and scallops? Try grilling them with lime and chili sauce!

The sauce:
¼ cup lime juice (fresh is best!)
¼ cup white wine
1 T ginger – fresh and peeled
1 shallot, chopped
1/3 cup cream or ½ & ½
2 T chili sauce
6 T butter, unsalted
Salt and pepper

The scallops:
½ pound Alaska scallops
¼ cup olive oil
Garlic to taste (2+ cloves), chopped

Marinate the scallops in olive oil with salt, pepper, garlic, and red pepper flakes for a half-hour while preparing the sauce.

Cook the lime juice, wine, ginger, and shallot in a small pan, then reduce by half over high heat (about 3 minutes). Lower the heat, add the cream, and reduce by half again. Then remove from heat and whip in the chili sauce. Add butter one tablespoon at a time with a whisk; season to taste with salt and pepper.

Grill over medium heat until scallops are done – they will be opaque after 2 minutes per side. (estimated timed).

Serve with the sauce, over rice. A side of asparagus or fresh Alaska peas is nice. This recipe makes 4-6 servings but be prepared for guests who want seconds!

These recipes will remind you of dishes served at several Anchorage restaurants. Ask your B&B host for recommendations!

Kenai River Drifter’s Lodge

Alaska provides a wide variety of outdoor adventures, not the least of which are the fishing opportunities.  Which one do you pick? Your next river adventure should be with Kenai River Drifter’s Lodge in Cooper Landing, Alaska.  They are a member of the Kenai River Professional Guide Association, and professional is the word that describes the team at Kenai River Drifter’s Lodge.  We had an incredible time fishing on Kasilof River with guide Shawn Coe.  The staff welcomed us into a cozy environment with open arms.  After a brief greeting and registration for my fishing license, Erica Tofte offered us a tour of the grounds, cabins, and service areas, including where to partake of a quick breakfast before starting our early morning time on the water.

Adventure is the central feature of a visit to Kenai River Drifter’s Lodge.  Others’ photos on Facebook struggle to reflect the splendor of the surroundings at the lodge. We ‘sat a spell’ by the campfire and chatted with other guests, appreciating the color of the Kenai River and the majesty of the Chugach National Forest. Two gentlemen, who were in the midst of a 6,000 mile Harley Davidson road trip, shared tales of bear viewing on their ride in from Canada.

Cabin accommodations include a home-like living room, well-equipped kitchenette and spacious bath downstairs as well as sleeping arrangements for as many as six in very comfortable beds upstairs. Maybe it was the time around that campfire that made me drowsy enough to sleep when I truly wanted to stay awake and aware of the coziness inside and the views of the river and mountains outside my room.

Filleting fish at the end of the day at Kenai River Drifter’s Lodge in Cooper Landing AK

Bob Rima arranged our fishing trip from Kasilof landing to the Cook Inlet.  We started very early and thus decided to forego the sauna with its river view the night before. The cool of the morning gave way to warming sunshine: everyone dressed in layers, so all was good.  What a surprise to head for fishing without the sound and smell of a motored boat to convey us.  Shawn rowed, stopping at several of his favorite fishing holes as we moved downstream. We had ‘fish on’ before the last two spots, affectionally called Desperation and Prayer.  Successful we were and pleased that we’d caught dinner for the night.

With the clean, comfortable lodging, the professionalism of the staff, and the amazing beauty of Alaska, a stay or with Kenai River Drifter’s Lodge will meet with pleasure for families with kids, elders, serious fishers, and anyone else who has dreams of an Alaska adventure. Whether you want to fish or take a scenic float (or float and hike) it’s the trip of a lifetime! This one should be on your bucket list not just once, but for as many return visits as you can make.

In 1998, the project to redesign the tunnel to handle car and truck traffic, and today, one can drive to Whittier. 2020 will be the year of its twentieth anniversary of service by this 13,300-foot tunnel.

The 16-foot wide tunnel opens for one-way traffic on a set schedule, so visitors must consult the posted schedule to know when to get through from either end. AM and ends at 11:15 PM during summer months unless a construction project is set. Traffic stars at 5:30 As the only point of land access, the Whittier Tunnel is always busy, so arrive early if you plan to make it before the traffic flow switches to the other end!

Whittier did not ‘begin’ in the 1900s. The area has been a hunting, gathering, and transit point for Chugach Eskimos for access between Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm and is rich in Alaska Native history.

When the Alaska Gold Rush occurred, excited prospectors and miners came to Whittier, then headed for the gold fields, climbing Portage Pass to trek to the Kenai Peninsula and Cook Inlet.

Today, Whittier is not merely a military town. The port handles freight and recreation, with fishing, cruise excursions, and boating among the options. A drive around the town leads one to abandoned military buildings, one of while is 14-stories tall. This building has apartments (home to the majority of Whittier residents) and is connected by a tunnel to the Whittier School, allowing students to get to classes regardless of the weather. The other large structure, the Buckner Building was once called a ‘city’ as it included a theatre, places to eat, and sundry services that operated during the 1950s. It has been abandoned, but locals will share the stories of its past. Five other buildings constructed and used during the Cold War still exist and all seven survived the Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964. Signs have been erected for walking tours, so plan to spend some time on foot.

Begich Tower

Begich Tower – Home to Most of Whittier’s Residents

In spite of its rising and falling eras of military importance, Whittier has thrived. Over 700,000 visitors come through Whittier annual, while the resident population remains under 220, according to the US Census Bureau. Perhaps nowhere else will you find a population that is more community-centric! Every resident has a hand in making the town function. With Anchorage about 53 miles away, there is always an opportunity to get a fresh view, but back they come to participate in an experience of ‘home’ in Whittier.
